A trip to North Wales wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the National Trust’s Bodnant Garden. Located in the Conwy Valley, and surrounded by the stunning Carneddau mountains of Snowdonia, these gardens offer something for everyone. From impressive formal terraces to challenging woodland hikes, the gardens are truly a site to see.

Created over a span of 150 years by multiple generations of the McLaren family who collected plants from all over the world, the garden was given to the National Trust in 1949.

See exotic plant species (as well as local Welsh favorites)

Here you can view traditional, local plantings side by side with rare species from Asia, North and South America and more. There is something to see – and smell! – around every corner, and in every season.

You can wander through a meadow full of wildflowers, climb wooded trails to get spectacular views from the hilltop, stroll through formal Italianate gardens, trek through the Dell with its towering trees or just find a spot to sit and enjoy the peace. With over 80 acres of lovingly-tended parkland, you’ll never run out of things to see.

Bodnant Garden even has its own “tree giants” – full grown Sequoias and Japanese Umbrella Pines – which tower over the landscape. For flower-enthusiasts, walking under the famed Laburnum Arch is a well-attended Spring tradition.

When you want refreshment or rest, the solar-powered Pavilion Tea Room is available for food and drink, and convenient benches and resting spots are situated around the park just where you most want them.

A sustainability mission

The National Trust has a mission to reduce use of fossil fuels at its UK properties to half by 2020 to cut back on carbon emissions. You can see examples of sustainability and renewable energy sources at work all over Bodnant Garden, from battery-powered garden tools to photovoltaic panels to a battery powered robot mower!

Bodnant Garden is worth a visit! Strolling through the grounds gives a unique glimpse into another world and an extraordinary opportunity to experience gardening and environmental caretaking on a grand scale.
